PROJECT BRIEF

Scrub to clean! Rubbing and removing everything no longer needed and present a tidy world. In this fantasy of bathroom, you will be able to clean out the space by scrubbing a magical soap and make the toilet paper to absorb.

STARTING FROM A VERB: SCRUB

Scrub, defined by Oxford Language, means “to rub (someone or something) hard so as to clean them, typically with a brush and water”.  In Chinese culture, specifically, the verb “scrub” can be used in describing the situation of playing Mahjong, a special gambling game. As is shown, the intension and expression of scrubbing vary by cases, but by scrubbing, one is required to be focused, giving pressure, and following a route or a scale.

HOW TO INVITE PEOPLE TO START SCRUBBING?

SCALE AND CONTEXT

According to our user test around the scale and the context, people would be interested in picking up the bricks and scrub following the pattern, regardless of the Mahjong setting.

PATTERN, MATERIAL, TEXTURE

It was through the development of patterns engraved on the surface that we decided to use a ‘soap’ as our physical interface. We tested various kinds of shape, size, and the form of the humps and embossment. And sopa was a handy solution due to its rounded corner and smooth surface.

HOW TO MOTIVATE PEOPLE TO KEEP SCRUBBING?

Based on the decision of 3D printing a soap as the physical interface, we added a gamified context where the audience need to keep scrubbing to prevent the toilet paper from getting down to the dirty floor.

To motivate them to do so, we created an absurd story where the toilet paper would keep growing while other items in the bathroom was scrubbed off. At the end of the day, the world will be full of the gigantic toilet paper.
